The WSOP Main Event at the Rio

Wednesday, July 14, 2010 9:42 AM

WSOP Main Event 2009For those of us, who have played in the WSOP Main Event series, it is that time of the year again to prepare yourself for the major grind that only the WSOP $10,000 Main Event can bring once a year.  Last year 6,500 players competed in the WSOP Main Event with Joseph (Joe) Cada taking top prize with $8.5 Million in winnings.

As we draw closer to the Main Event starting on July 5th at the Rio, Vegas and the rest of the poker community gets ready for what will surely be another hectic and enduring schedule to keep grinding through the sea of poker players and hoping to make your way to the final nine (aka November Nine) for July 17th.  The November Nine will then take a nicely earned break and resume for the beginning of November (Nov 6-9) for the grand finale to be taped live for TV programming on ESPN.

WSOP Main Event 2010Those of you who will be testing the waters for the first time at the WSOP Main Event, get ready to be tested on all levels.  You will be confronted with a multitude of unpredictable "wildcard" players, to the tightest players in the land and to the savvy poker pro's, as seen on your TV screens.  The variance of players is plenty.  Get ready for the action and pick your battles wisely.  Try to isolate the "weaker" players and start building yourself a poker chip fortress, cause you will need a large stack to move deep into the tourney and to last a while.  Try not to go head's up against the wildcard players as you will find yourself often on a coin toss situation with these players.

Remember to come prepared, which includes being well rested, replenished (with food/energy and tons of water) and keep a clear mind on the game and the players ...as it is very easy to get distracted in this environment and very easy to make a costly mistake.   A lot of players bring headsets for music and play on their cell phones, etc ...however we have seen tons of mistakes happen when players are distracted with their headsets or didn't hear a call or action by a player.  Be careful, with your entertainment choices, if you use them.

Some key thoughts here to adopt would be: Be patient, pace yourself, isolate when possible, don't take the coin flips unless absolutely necessary, minimize risk and maximize value.  Remember these simple facts and this will elevate your game highly at the WSOP Main Event ...and who knows, maybe you'll cash in for BIG BUCKS!

PS: If you follow our advice and win Top Prize in the WSOP Main Event, we take a 10% Management Referral cut.  Nahhh we're just kidding ....but a Free Pizza will do!

Good luck on the felt!
